What?

What's up?

Jan 12, 2006: Check out the webcast of Steve Jobs's MWSF keynote for Apple, where he announced photocasting for iPhoto 6 (Yes, it wasn't all about the new Intel Macs!). This sounds very similar to PicaSto's goals (especially with our iPhoto exporter and iPhoto proxy client), albeit it has to be seen whether the format used by iPhoto is compatible with our format and to what extent the two can be integrated.

PicaSto is a system for decentralized picture storage and sharing on the internet with separation of content and presentation. It uses the RDF metadata model to make the metadata available independently of the actual pictures.

Why?

PicaSto has the following goals:

  • separation of content and presentation
  • decentralization
  • easy publishing of pictures on a web server
  • integration with existing systems

Popular existing systems lack one of the first two goals, as explained in Deficiencies of existing systems.

How?

The solution to these problems is to present the metadata about pictures and galleries independently of the pictures themselves in RDF/XML on a web server for the client to fetch alongside the pictures.

The system consists of a publisher command line application which extracts metadata from several sources and publishes the pictures together with the newly created RDF/XML file on a webserver as well as several clients with a GUI or a web interface.

The long-term goal is to create a standard for decentralized picture sharing with this project providing sample implementations.

What else?

We are currently in the planning stage. You can see our roadmap, some links and our project page on Sourceforge.

Who?

The project is currently developed by Bernhard Bauer. Thanks go to Axel Auweter, Ulrich Bauer and Martin Bauer for their suggestions and support.
